Saturday was another beautiful day, so Dan and I decided to continue our biking excursion down the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River. Dan had planned out a nice 50-mile loop between Prescott and Bay City, but due to some poor planning on our part, the ride coincided with a huge bike rally… and we eventually just got muscled off the road. The constant noise, gas fumes, and a-holes buzzing us every few seconds was more than we could take. We stopped just south of Diamond Bluff and took a meandering backroads route back, in which we encountered only a handful of cars and bikes. It was actually quite enjoyable, wish we’d thought of it sooner.
Even though we cut the route down to 36 miles, I feel like I barely made it back, almost fainting at the top of the biggest hill a couple miles out of town. Note to self: bring some food next time, and invest in a front derailleur. Turns out I actually need a granny gear on some of those hills — who knew. And to rub a little salt in the wound, I found out last night that a former coworker of mine did a 119-mile loop on Sunday, including the stretch we did on Saturday; he’s a hardcore rider, but I was completely put to shame =)
