scuttle scuttle
the month of june is almost gone, and apparently i haven’t updated since the beginning of may. i guess it’s no secret where the previous two weeks or so have gone, but before that i had quite a bit going on (relatively speaking).
on memorial day weekend i made my first trip to the UP for a weekend of wedding-related festivities, and had a blast. while the wedding was a lot of fun,...

beerweek
maybe it was just a coincidence that carlos miller was born this week, but i’ve been doing more than my casual beer-drinking this week. it began with a beer-tasting on tuesday (the first one i’ve ever been to, i think); i’ve also got an elusive surly brewery tour lined up for tomorrow, to be followed by a large graduation celebration (not mine, of course) on saturday. but i...

congrats erin and samm! happy birth-day charles miller! <3 <3 <3

bears!
last week was barrel-aged week at town hall, and being the poor and/or lazy grad student that i am, took full advantage of that fact this weekend. on friday i ditched ‘work’ early to watch the us hockey game and try the port barrel-aged baltic porter (see above), which was as good as i remember it being, although i’m not sure how much the port flavor really added to it. i tried...

So the weekend got off to a bit of a rough start when I awoke Saturday morning to find that Brian’s car had been broken into with an ice chipper. Upon closer inspection I noticed they had not touched any of his CD’s or his (rather nice) soccer shoes, and was rather puzzled, thinking it a crime of spite. Of course it turned out that Brian had left his backpack in the front seat, and...
twenty-ten: year of the lobster?
we’re more than two weeks into 2010, figured the new decade was worth an update. so far not a lot going on, but the semester starts up again tomorrow, and while for the last couple years this hasn’t meant much, i have to TA again this semester. i had planned on being done at the end of last semester, but that plan got derailed when i had to teach. the only thing i got out of that...

scallion!
having been thwarted the last 4 or 5 times i’ve tried to eat there, i would have put the chances somewhere around 1 or 2% that it would actually be open, even to the extent of trying to decide what i was going to order at our backup option. perhaps it was steve’s proximity, or maybe just the decade’s last effort to throw us a bone, but the scallion was open for lunch! given that...
woo
it’s been a pretty awesome christmas break, i’ve really enjoyed being back in ames and relaxing a bit. i think i’ve managed to hit up most of the ames staples (jessbar, chc (2x), gps&d, sg, and the cafe) and engage in all the usual activities (playing mario + watching foreign-language war epics at sam’s, drinking lots of coffee and generally overeating, and last but not...

as sam was kind enough to remind me, it’s been almost a month since the last update. guess i’ve been getting a bit lazy but there hasn’t been a whole lot going on, save one pretty awesome weekend when steve graced mpls with his presence. sadly the weather was not too cooperative (we had snow… in october) but we managed to hit most of the usual highlights: post-band beers...

win
well i survived the marathon, and not only did i manage to go the whole way without stopping but i ran it a lot faster than i was aiming for, finishing in 3:19 (good for a 7:36 mile pace). i owe this partly to the good fortune i had to avoid any gastrointestinal disasters, but also to the fact that i forgot to bring a watch. there were precious few timers along the route, so i just ran as fast as...
here we go
just finished up my pre-race breakfast of oatmeal and a banana and had some time to spare before the marathon starts in 90 minutes. pretty sure this is my earliest post ever. it’s currently 47F (a bit warmer than it was supposed to be) and so far i feel pretty good… but what i have i gotten myself into???

happy nine day all and happy b-day millers =)
twenty
while the marathon training has not gone quite as well as i would have hoped, this past weekend i managed to hit a pretty significant milestone, and not a moment too soon: i ran 20 miles in a single day. i have to admit that i could not have run much farther, and even to hit that mark i required a 20-minute pit-stop at home to take care of a little ‘janke stomach’ and properly...
the lake
it had been probably a good three or four years since the old group had made the trip up to the lake, but a couple weekends ago the stars finally aligned and four of us (myself, brent, jafar, and brian) were able to get in a long weekend of fishing up at my grandparents’ place. the weather didn’t quite cooperate; it was a bit cooler and windier than we would have liked, and the fish...
whither august?
apparently at least one person regularly checks this page and was disappointed by the lack of august updates, so i guess a recap will have to do. it was a busy month, starting off with a mini ahs-reunion at kyle and ashley’s wedding. it was a good time to catch up with a few old friends (and surprise guest) and spend a little time in the great city of ames.
after a couple uneventful...

denverfest: day 3
the last day of vacation in denver (for this trip) was actually spent for the most part out of denver. after enjoying a bit of a sleep-in, we journeyed to boulder to hang out for the day. we started by taking in pearl street in all its glory: it was another beautiful day and the hippies, petitioners, and street performers were all out in force. i had not been there in perhaps 6 years, and even now...
denverfest: day 2
day two in the land of steve was action-packed, so much so that it required an afternoon nap. we started the day relatively early (9am!) with a drive out to mt. evans, whose 14,000-foot summit can nearly be reached by car (and the trusty subaru was more than up to the challenge). i will admit to being a tad dizzy at that elevation but it was well worth it for the incredible views from up top. and...
denverfest: day 1
well we arrived without much incident in denver this afternoon. we began the evening’s activities with a trip to a surprisingly good brewery in aurora where we sampled a number of tasty brews, including a really well-done barleywine and trippel. i was impressed. for an encore (har har?) we got relatively adventurous and went to dinner at a restaurant that steve had not tried before, but it...
way to go mn
… only took you 8 months to elect a senator. however, being the pessimist that i am, i’m still waiting for the catch. doesn’t seem likely that something as insignificant as the minnesota supreme court would get in the way of the gop. still, i’ll admit i never thought i’d ever hear these words uttered from norm’s mouth:
“I join all Minnesotans in...

futbol, etc.
so a few random things here. i don’t often post about soccer since it’s one of those things that’s really only interesting if you’re directly involved (even more so than anything else i put on here), but tonight was a rather special night. this season my team had gotten moved up to the second-highest division in the monday city league, and after 6 games had second-to-last...
dam to dam '09
This past weekend was the Dam to Dam 20K back home in the motherland, and as has been the case the past 2 years, I made the trek south with some friends from the Cities (and Ankeny). As usual, it was both a tiring and entertaining weekend, but well worth it. I even managed to run into a couple friends after the race.
I’m not sure if all the stars were aligned or if I ate something magical,...

#irx vacation
after a relaxing, slow-paced weekend, it’s been an even slower week. pull up, steve!
running man
Perhaps it was a moment of weakness, but this weekend I signed up for the Twin Cities Marathon in October. It’s one of those things that, in spite of not really enjoying running that much, I’ve always wanted to try… but just once. I now have five months to get myself into good enough condition to hold up for such a long race. And if the incredible soreness I’m experiencing...
back
I’ve been back from Alaska for almost a week now, and felt like re-capping the trip a bit before I get too accustomed to my old routine again. This should have been a bunch of separate posts, but since the internet refused to cooperate in my absence, I’ll pick up where I left off:
After a few more days in Anchorage for the conference (which was actually one of the better ones...
Anchorage
I’ve been here just over 24 hours, and while a good chunk of that time was spent at the conference or preparing for my presentation in the afternoon (which went fine), I’ve already noticed a few things:
1) Many (but certainly not all) people here seem to be huge Palin fans. Go figure.
2) Everything downtown is closed on Sunday except for the bars (I ordered room service food for the...
